Good news, this month we included two new countries: Portugal and the Netherlands. This gives us the opportunity to analyse consumer behaviour in Europe to an even greater extent.
Europe’s top 5 summary for January 2014:
To achieve these rankings, we considered the 5 most popular brands in 7 European countries. Michelin takes the pole position of this general European Ranking. Their first place in Italy and their leading position in Portugal and Spain helped them to knock Continental from the top spot. Continental is second, thanks to their 1st position in Germany and the fact that we integrated the Dutch market in our rankings. The same rule applies to Bridgestone who are very popular in Italy, Spain and Portugal. Goodyear and Pirelli are often in the top 5 most popular brands in Europe, that’s why all of them are within the top 5 podium.
Note that this classification does not take into account the size of the market, but rather the manufacturing ranks for each country.
You will find below the breakdown per country of those rankings.

Once again Michelin is the tyre brand of preference for French consumers in January 2013.Therefore, we won’t be surprised if we find them in the first place again next month. Another important fact is Goodyear’s shift up into third position, still in a close competition with Bridgestone while Hankook is holding its position well in fifth place.

Like France, the top 2 remains unchanged. It is unclear how Michelin could take first place from Continental or how any other brands could knock Michelin down into third position. The rest of the ranking is dominated by other brands. Note that the German consumer does not seem to be tied in to any particular brand. Therefore it is difficult for any brand to hold on to third, fourth or fifth place in Germany in the long term.

In Britain, the Michelin vs Continental war leaned in Continental’s favour last month. However, as we have seen, the divide between the two brands is very narrow. The coming months will help us better understand the UK market and determine a winner. However, contrary to the German market, British consumers seem to have a clear vision of what tyres they choose for third, fourth and fifth place: Bridgestone, Goodyear and Pirelli.

While we demonstrated the choice of Italian consumers as similar to the UK last month, it is a surprise to find the Japanese brand, Bridgestone, taking second place in this month’s top 5. We are looking forward to February’s stats to see if this trend continues. Note that Goodyear is entering the top 5 for the first month of the year.
